Wiley Metal Fabricating, Inc. (WMF) continued their ongoing community support on Friday, February 1, 2019, by donating 88 backpacks full of food for the students of Frances Slocum Elementary School.

The Backpack Program is a national program combating childhood hunger for those children who rely on their school lunch as potentially their only source of a meal. The program organized by Feeding America “Has been helping children get the nutritious and easy-to-prepare food they need to get enough to eat on the weekends.”

Frances Slocum Elementary School has a close connection to the family of Wiley Metal Fabricating, Inc. Dee Wiley (wife of Ed Wiley – President of Wiley Metal) was a teacher at Frances Slocum for 18 years, retiring in 2015 and had this to say about the donation “For Wiley Metal to continue to provide support to Frances Slocum even after my retirement, shows the commitment and support Wiley Metal has for our local children.”

This outreach was initiated and promoted by Nikki Kraemer, whose passion for community outreach has been contagious by the employees of Wiley Metal Fabricating, Inc. Nikki explains her reasoning to choosing this program because the childhood poverty level in Grant County is at a significant high percentage. “This program strives to provide food for kids who do not get an adequate amount of food during the weekend. For some kids, the only meals provided are when they are at school.”

The leadership of Wiley Metal Fabricating, Inc. has challenged the staff to identify, and support one community outreach program each month in 2019. In the last 3 months, Wiley Metal has supported a Food Drive as well as preparing and serving a lunch for the St. Martin Community Center, sponsored a PAL (Police Athletic League) Judo Tournament and Tee Ball team, and participated in a workshop teaching and demonstration welding practices at Eastbrook High School. Wiley Metal has also donated more than 5,000 pounds of steel for the students of Eastbrook High School to master their welding techniques.

Throughout 2019, Wiley Metal Fabricating is committed to their continuation of community and employee outreach participating in the Cancer Walk (May), hosting an employee golf outing (Summer), and a family day at the Fort Wayne Zoo (September).
