We often get questions about the type of welding we use and why. Recently, we’ve seen more inquiries regarding X-Ray quality welds. These are superior quality welds used in some very specific applications.

What is TIG Welding?

Let’s start with a quick look at TIG welding services. TIG is an abbreviation for Tungsten Inert Gas and is also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or GTAW. In this process, a tungsten electrode carries current to the welding arc. The weld is usually cooled with argon gas. Prior to the widespread use of TIG welding in the 1930’s, many steel and aluminum welds took extensive time as torches were used.

Advantages to TIG

There are a lot of advantages to TIG welding including a smoother appearance. This makes it a good choice for consumer products where a finished look is desirable.

TIG welding allows you to throttle up and down on the amperage that is being used. This feature is particularly valuable when alloy steels are being welded. Since you can throttle up the heat and then throttle it down when completed, it allows for “soft” starts and stops. This prevents temperature shocks to the metal.

High Quality Welds

When you need an X-Ray quality weld, TIG welding services are your best option unless the material is too thin. TIG can be more time-consuming than MIG welding, but again, it delivers a smoother weld bead. If you would like to know a bit more about the differences between TIG and MIG welding and the advantages of each, we encourage you to read our previous blog on the subject.
